The internet of things uses data to make informed decisions, automating parts of our everyday life. Everything from our morning routines to the way we work will be affected.

“The Internet of Things (IoT) is a computing concept that describes a future where everyday physical objects will be connected to the Internet and be able to identify themselves to other devices.” -taken from the HR Bartender

The internet of things is about the internet creeping out from technology into everyday devices. Our cars, clothes, houses, desks, wearables, and even kettles can all be connected to communicate with each other to automate our lives.

A commonly stated example of the internet of things runs like this: your alarm clock adjusts your wake up time based on weather and traffic conditions, your car automatically starts and warms up when you’re about to get in, and your GPS can select the best route to work based on traffic conditions.

The above example only scratches the surface of the internet of things. The goal is to automate as many processes as possible, to get our lives looking similar to these famous morning routines of Wallace and Gromit.

The internet of things will change the way HR operates too – particularly when it comes to people analytics, process automation and workforce modelling. Here are 3 ways you can expect the internet of things to revolutionise your workplace:

HR will become more predictive than reactive

Having more data available from more sources means you can have a better perspective on your organisation. Coupling HR with data analytics makes you the go-to resource for organisational information.

Data can be used in algorithms to predict outcomes in business. HR will no longer respond to the changing workplace, and will instead use data to shape the workplace.

Check out this dashboard by Sid Lee. They’ve set up sensors throughout their office to measure various parts of their organisation, from office temperature to the number of coffees poured. Imagine what you could do with a dashboard of similar data!

Candidate profiles will be generated in real time

The workplace is moving so fast that job descriptions are rarely relevant anymore. The expectations of employees as they take on new projects changes constantly.

The internet of things can measure the macro and micro environmental factors in your organisation, letting you know what skills you need in your organisation.

You’ll have a complete picture of where your organisation stands when you go to hire – no more outdated position descriptions from years ago.

The internet of things will tell you the current workforce trends, allowing you to hire people with the relevant skills for the future.

Once you know what skills you need in employees, the internet of things can actually help you hire them.

Workforce modelling will become on demand

The internet of things shows you what skills you need in an organisation now. Skill gaps will become a thing of the past as workforce modelling becomes data-driven and predictive.

But not only will you know what skills you need for each project, you will know which skills are no longer necessary. You will be able to introduce employees with relevant skills as you need them.

With a faster-paced workplace, the skills required to grow an organisation changes constantly. A big step towards this on-demand talent pool is making it easier to hire employees.

The slow process to bring talent must be sped up to keep pace with the talent analytics offered by the internet of things. The on-demand economy will speed up talent intake into organisations, making them more agile as a result.

Take your first step towards workplace automation with workforce analytics.

You can take your first step towards a more automated workplace with workforce modelling. Use data and predictive analytics the same way the internet of things operates.

Using technology in HR now will make it easier to implement internet of things concepts once the technology is widely available, and help you stay ahead of the curve.
